Welfare benefits training
Benefits are the main source of income for many tenants. However, complex processes often mean that they don’t claim all the benefits and tax credits to which they are entitled. Under-claiming benefit entitlement can reduce a tenant’s income to the point that it affects their ability to pay their rent and meet even their basic living needs.
You no longer need to feel unable to help when you see a tenant struggling to cope.
This course will give you confidence, and a toolkit to show you how to spot which benefits clients are entitled to, so that you can refer them on appropriately.
You will learn:
- An overview of the current benefits system and the range of benefits available
- The triggers for claiming different types of benefits
- Tips to ensure effective dealings with the DWP and local authority benefit offices
- What’s involved in the process of making a claim
- Changes of circumstances and the effect on benefits
- How to challenge incorrect decisions.
Who will benefit from attending?
Housing officers, support workers, Housing Benefit staff, homelessness staff and rent arrears staff who are new to advice work, or have little or no experience of the welfare benefits and tax credits system.
