The Mental Capacity Act – an introduction

The Mental Capacity Act places clear legal obligations upon social care and health providers.While the role of housing organisations may seem less obvious, it is important that staff are aware of the principles of the Act and the implications for their agencies.

This course gives an overview of the Act and associated Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.

Objectives:

  • Understanding what mental capacity is and why it’s important
  • An outline of key aspects of the Act
  • What the Act means for housing organisations
  • Working with other agencies.

Course content

  • The five principles of the Mental Capacity Act
  • Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
  • Best interest decision-making
  • The role of advocacy.

Learning will be supported via case scenarios and small group working and discussion.

Who should attend?

Frontline housing staff and their line managers, sheltered/extra care sheltered housing scheme managers, neighbourhood housing officers, support officers, resident and mobile wardens.
Our trainer

Sue Bestjan is an experienced social care professional, with a strong regulatory background. She has inspected and assessed both registered social care provision and council performance. She is an independent chair of two Safeguarding Adults Boards and is an Associate Consultant for the Department of Health.
